"Overwhelming success" for Viva!'s Incredible Veggie Roadshow in Southampton

Release date:
Monday, June 13, 2005

People flocked to Southampton's Sir James Matthews Building, at the Southampton Institute, for Viva! "s Incredible Veggie Roadshow last Saturday 11 June. Almost 1,200 people were counted through the door by the time the show closed at 4pm. The show's popularity exceeded all expectations, with even more people attending than came to the Brighton show in November last year. Everything you could ever have wanted to know about going, being or staying veggie/vegan was on tap, including delicious food tastings from vegan food manufacturers. Hampshire based celebrity cook, Rose Elliot, author of more than 50 vegetarian recipe books, opened theRoadshow by tucking into a delicious and decadent tray of strawberries dipped in dark chocolate before welcoming the crowds. Rose said, "Healthy eating and the welfare of animals should be important to us all. That's why I'm delighted Viva! are bringing their fantastic Incredible Veggie Roadshow to Southampton." Photos of Rose opening the show, and other images from the day can be viewed at: http://www.viva.org.uk/roadshows/post_southampton (Hi-res versions are downloadable from the page) The Incredible Veggie Roadshow is organised by campaign group Viva! as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, and will make appearances in cities all over the UK. Next stop is Newcastle on Saturday June 11. Viva!, is an international animal campaigning group with offices in the UK, USA and Poland. It carries out undercover investigations to expose animal abuse and successes include ending the sale of "exotic' meats such as kangaroo and crocodile by all big supermarkets, stopping the debeaking of ducks in the UK, slashing the export of Polish "meat' horses to the EU and persuading a US supermarket chain to entirely rewrite its animal welfare codes. Viva!'s most recent victory was last year when Marks & Spencer dropped all factory-farmed whole ducks following an expos' of its main duck supplier. The supplier went bust! Viva! also produces materials on going vegetarian and vegan. "We are absolutely delighted that so many people from Southampton came along and I believe it indicates a fundamental change in people's attitudes to animal cruelty, health and the state of the planet. It was a fun day out and a celebration of veggie living but the underlying message was deadly serious', says Juliet Gellatley, Viva! "s international director. Due to an unprecedented demand, Viva! "s new It's Time to Go Veggie magazine ran out on the day. The colourful 40 page guide, which provides all the information anyone could ever want to help them change to a healthier diet, is available free of charge from Viva! for anyone who missed out. I read, with some dismay, your blog Is There Enough Meat for Everyone? I see that this was written some time ago and hope that you have since changed your position to one more in keeping with current thinking.
