The coronavirus crisis has been difficult for everyone, but there have been a few wins for animals during this time to help put a smile on our face.

Most recently, a greyhound racing stadium in Peterborough has closed permanently adding to the positive knock-on effects for animals during the Covid-19 outbreak.

This is great news for the greyhounds who were forced to race on this track, risking their lives simply for human entertainment.

Greyhound racing is an inherently cruel sport where the dogs often severely injure themselves during racing. Common injuries include broken necks and broken backs, dislocations, torn muscles and paralysis.

While not racing, they are usually kept in small cages where they can barely turn around. Their quality of life is a far cry from the animals we keep as companions, all so they can race to make people money.

The closure of this famous greyhound racing track gives hope that the end of animal exploitation is coming closer. The covid-19 outbreak has shown that these sports are not essential to our society and has perhaps given people time to reflect on the ethics of using animals for entertainment.

We call on sporting bodies to reconsider any sport that involves the exploitation of animals. These animals are unique individuals with their own needs and desires which are routinely abused for the sake of entertainment.
