Government watchdog backs vegan claims that “humane milk a myth”

As many of you will have noticed by now, Go Vegan World have launched a very successful billboard campaign with numerous posters advocating veganism around many of the cities across the UK and beyond.
One such campaign is their “Humane milk is a myth. Don’t buy it” poster which includes text below stating:

“I went vegan the day I visited a dairy. The mothers, still bloody from birth, searched and called frantically for their babies. Their daughters, fresh from their mothers’ wombs but separated from them, trembled and cried piteously, drinking milk from rubber teats on the wall instead of their mothers’ nurturing bodies. All because humans take their milk.”

As veganism rises in popularity, the dairy industry is certainly feeling the pressure.

A court case ruling has recently concluded that non-dairy based milks cannot be called ‘milk’ which was certainly disappointing however most recently the dairy industry has been at it again, trying to push back against the tide of veganism affecting their market and profits.

Last February, seven farmers complained  to The Advertising Standards Authority about the Go Vegan World poster which showed an image of a cow behind barbed wire with the headline to the advertisement “Humane milk is a myth. Don’t buy it”.

They stated that the advertising poster was inaccurate and misleading and could not be substantiated.

The ASA have responded and stated that while the language was “emotional and hard-hitting, we understood it was the case that calves were generally separated from their mothers very soon after birth, and we therefore concluded that the ad was unlikely to materially mislead readers”.

Vegan campaigners across the globe are celebrating the government watchdog ruling which confirmed the vegan view that humane milk is indeed a myth”.

The director of Go Vegan World, Sandra Higgins  said that the ruling was very important indeed. She said  the campaign advert was “to let people know that no matter where the milk and dairy products they purchase have come from, whether an industrial-scale dairy farm or a smallholding, for each cow, legal, standard practice necessitates her pregnancy, the removal of her calf, and her slaughter, so that we can drink the milk that she produced to feed her infant”. “The ad highlights that the problem faced by animals in the dairy industry is not how they are treated, but that they are used at all.”

This ruling is proof that the message is being received and changes are happening in the public perception of the dairy industry. We are making a real difference and we are getting closer to a vegan world every day.

Let’s keep highlighting injustice and cruelty and keep fighting for a vegan world!
