Safety
The internet can be a fantastic way to make new friends but we all need to take precautions to ensure that we are using the web safely. At Viva! we are careful about putting people on our pen pals list - but there is no way of knowing for certain that someone is who they say they are. For example, it is very easy for a man to pretend to be a teenage girl on the internet so please consider the following safety measures:

• NEVER give out your home address, phone number or personal details such as which school you attend and what you look like. We won't publish this sort of information on the lists and you are strongly advised not to include it in your messages.
• NEVER arrange to meet anyone unless it is in a public place and you have an adult relative present.
• As an additional safeguard if you are using email do consider signing up to a web-based email service (eg yahoo or hotmail) rather than using your home email address.
• If you are very young, it is also a good idea to use the email address belonging to one of your parents and to mention that you are doing this.
  

Make sure a parent, teacher or guardian knows when you're surfing the net or receiving snail mail letters.
Although this is extremely rare (in fact it hasn’t happened yet!) you should be aware that if you do get an email or letter with rude or unpleasant things, you MUST tell Viva! straight away so that we can take the offending person off the list immediately. Remember that it's not your fault that someone has sent you this.
