"Dear Minister or MP [add you MP’s name if writing to them]
I am writing to register my view that the slaughter of farmed animals without pre-stunning should be banned in the UK.
I support the principle of multiculturalism and deplore racism absolutely but I do not believe that slaughter without pre-stunning should not be tolerated for any reason. In fact, slaughter without pre-stunning is illegal in the UK – the only exception is for so-called religious slaughter. I do not believe that religious freedom should trump animal rights.
Recently, the slaughter of animals without pre-stunning has been banned in other European countries – including Denmark and Poland. These developments have re-ignited the debate in the UK. Recently, John Blackwell, who took over as president elect of the British Veterinary Association (BVA) in 2013, has stated that killing animals by letting them bleed to death after slitting their throats causes unnecessary suffering. He said: "The Danish unilateral banning [was done] purely for animal welfare reasons, which is right." John Blackwell's views echo those of Viva! and most other animal campaigning groups in the UK.
The Government’s own advisory body on animal welfare – FAWC (Farm Animal Welfare Council) – described slaughter without pre-stunning as “unacceptable” and recommended that it was banned in the UK. It said: “Such a massive injury would result in significant pain and distress.”
Please end the slaughter of animals in Britain without pre-stunning.

Viva! believes that slaughter without pre-stunning should be banned in the UK. However, we also reiterate our opposition to all slaughter and that is why we promote veganism as the only truly effective way to prevent animal suffering.
Viva!’s investigations show that millions of animals slaughtered by conventional means are ineffectively, painfully or incompletely stunned – this means that if you eat meat you will sometimes - and perhaps often - eat meat from what are effectively unstunned animals. It is also worth considering that the overwhelming majority of the 980 million killed each year in Britain lead lives of deprivation and suffering. Find out more about slaughter. Find out how easy it is to go vegan - or at least move in that direction.
