Vegetarians International Voice for Animals

Alan Ford

I’m an old hippy vegetarian. I haven’t eaten flesh or fish since 1973."

The star of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch has been vegetarian since 1973.

Having grown up in Elephant and Castle in Central London, Ford is famous for his distinctive cockney accent, which has featured not only in films, but in songs too. Although he typically plays the role of a heartless criminal, he has admitted that he doesn't like the idea of harming animals.

Ford left school at the age of 15 and took on various jobs before eventually ending up at the East 15 Acting School. He studied here for three years before appearing in Exorcist: The Beginning and the British gangster film The Long Good Friday. Since then, he has performed in a range of films and TV shows, including Law & Order, An American Werewolf in London, and most famously, Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Recently, Ford published a novel titled Thin Ice (2006). He said the book "evolved from a collection of anecdotes and actors’ tales." 2011 saw him starring as crime boss 'Carter' in the British film noir Jack Falls alongside his Lock, Stock co-stars Jason Flemyng and Dexter Fletcher, while in 2014, he was cast in the British crime thriller Two Days in the Smoke.
