“It’s Time to Go
Veggie” says Actress Pam Ferris
Ma Larkin shares her cookery skills
Through her great television roles as Ma Larkin (Darling
Buds of May) and Peggy Snow (Where the Heart Is), Pam Ferris
has become one of Britain’s best-loved actresses. And like
so many other people, she has been deeply disturbed and
shocked by the nightly scenes of slaughter on our TV
screens. Vegetarian charity, Viva! has been inundated with
calls from people wanting to go change their diet and go
veggie. To help them, Pam has produced a colourful, 28-page
vegetarian cookery guide - Pam Ferris Cooks Veggie.
Pam Ferris Cooks Veggie sells at £1.50, including
postage, and is one of several Viva! guides which cover the
vegetarian issues. Others include advice on health,
nutrition, genetic engineering and the life and death of
farmed animals.
Recipes included in Pam’s guide start with breakfast, move
through lunch and finish with dinner. They include such soul
food satisfiers as beany tomato hotpot, winter vegetable
stew with dumplings and sausage, onion and tomato pie. For
more cosmopolitan veggies there are dishes such as pasta
with red pepper and olive sauce, roasted peppers with cous
cous and peanut butter stir fry. Starters include sweet
potato and carrot soup and to finish there is a wonderful
chocolate sponge cake. Handy tips and advice are distributed
throughout. And everything is totally animal free - no meat,
dish, dairy or eggs are used in any of the recipes.
“Don’t ever think that going vegetarian limits your diet”,
says Pam, “it doesn’t - it expands it. It is so much more
varied, exciting and tasty.” And striking a chord with many
of the people who have asked Viva! for help in going veggie,
Pam adds: “Vegetarianism isn’t solely about indulging
myself. I feel strongly that I could never hurt or kill an
animal - nor have someone kill it on my behalf. With this
lifestyle, I don’t have to - and that makes me feel a whole
lot better”.
