Viva! Demands End to Factory Farming
Photocall: Tuesday, 2nd October at 1.30pm outside The Brighton Centre
on the Seafront, Brighton
Campaigners will gather outside the
Brighton Centre where the Labour party conference is being held to call
for an end to factory farming. Protesters dressed in animal masks will
unfold a giant banner proclaiming ‘It’s time to go Veggie’ over the scenes
of burning funeral pyres during foot and mouth. Others will be holding
placards and handing out leaflets.
Viva! is calling for an end to industrialised
agriculture, saying that the overcrowded conditions on factory farms and
the vast distances which animals are made to travel from market to slaughter,
cause diseases like foot and mouth to spread like wildfire. The vegetarian
organisation is urging the government to end factory farming and start
promoting organic, sustainable, non-animal agriculture.
Viva!’s ‘Go Veggie’ leaflet contains
hard, scientific information and explains the increased risks of food
poisoning, heart disease, strokes and cancer for meat eaters. Kat Macmillan,
Viva!’s Campaigner says, “Disease, infections and deadly superbugs are
now part of the factory farming system and pose a serious threat to humans.
“Nearly 900 million animals are killed
for meat every year, encouraged by subsidies and financial support. The
whole barbaric business has to end. Instead of ladling out cash to livestock
farmers, the government must act now and end factory farming, before it
ends us.”
