What I do
I joined Viva! as a health campaigner in 2005 after graduating from Bristol University with a PhD in molecular biology. My scientific training helped me research and write numerous reports, guides and fact sheets for Viva! including Fish-Free for Life, One in Nine (breast cancer and diet) and the substantial report on the detrimental health effects of consuming dairy; White Lies. This accompanied Viva!’s report The Dark Side of Dairy which spelt out the inherent cruelty of dairy farming. We were the first UK group to take on the dairy industry in this way, and many of our supporters go vegan after reading these reports.
I have also helped run the merchandise and sales department and am currently researching, writing and campaigning again for Viva!Health.
Working at Viva!
I love being part of a compassionate team of people who care deeply about animals and the planet, this is where we live! An added bonus is, I know there will never have been a ham and cheese toastie made in the office sandwich maker!
I went vegan because…
I saw leaflets on fox-hunting and vivisection and just joined up the dots between those types of cruelty and the meat and dairy industries. I didn’t want any part of it, as Viva! says – Not in my name!
My favourite vegetable…
I am a bit of a foodie and write about vegan food in my blog Justbloggs. My favourite foods change with the season and at the moment I am enjoying purple sprouting broccoli, I stir-fry it in toasted sesame seed oil with a sprinkle of soya sauce. Tomorrow it might be spinach, avocados, sweet potatoes, peas, beetroot… so much choice! I really look forward to the first fresh sweetcorn towards the end of the summer.
