At cafe maitreya we try to reflect the values of loving kindness in what we do. We want to serve great food but as part of doing this we try to use local, seasonal and organic ingredients when practical. In addition, all our food is vegetarian and we make sure we use good quality, fresh produce. often our staff will bring in herbs, salad leaves or vegetables from their own gardens or allotments, or wild produce that they have collected (always in a sustainable way!).

The restaurant serves food that's more of the fast-food variety. For about £3.50 you get a large pita (that was freshly made by the same people that run Falafel King), 6 big falafel balls, lots of salad and your choice of sauces. The guy that owns Falafel King is really friendly and talkative. There's also a space called the Khan downstairs, which can cater for about 50 people in an event.

There's also a Falafel King takeaway stall at the Harbourside: 11-12 Queen Square, Bristol BS1 4DJ

COMMENTS
The Kebele cafe has been providing affordable, delicious food to the local community since 1995. They believe in providing a space for people to get together and share food in a non-commercial environment. The café is run entirely by volunteers on a not-for-profit basis. Thanks to everyone who volunteers to keep them going!

In 2009 they renovated the kitchen to a professional standard and now it is a much easier place to work in! We have also renovated the storeroom that has a stock of staple ingredients that are clearly labeled and easy to find.

They believe in minimising their impact on the environment, so they try where possible to use donations of leftover fruit and vegetables from local retailers. They support other co-operatives and buy most of our dried produce from the Essential Foods co-op and local independent shops. They aim to buy and use organic ingredients where they can.

Vegan brunch is cooked on Saturday by volunteers using locally sourced, usually organic, ingredients. Come and kickstart your weekend in a relaxed atmosphere, with food for thought and for tummies too!

The Kebele Cafe serves a single dish (rather than a menu). Get there early to be guaranteed a meal – sometimes they get very busy and, as it’s usually delicious, it can go pretty quickly!

They’re always looking for new people to get involved. Helping out at the Cafe is a great way of meeting new people, learning more about vegan cooking and sharing in life at Kebele. If you would like to volunteer to cook, email them on kebelecafe@riseup.net, come along and put your name down on the rota, or drop by from 3pm on any Sunday to help with chopping veg!

The cafe side of Kebele is administered by the Cafe Collective. They meet on the last Wednesday of every month, from 6.30 – 7.30pm. They are an open, non-hierarchical group and they would love you to join! If you are interested in cooking and want to join the collective, then email kebelecafe@riseup.net or come to their meeting.

The Kebele Cafe also provides catering for local community events.

Although this is mostly a place for takeaways, there are a few metal bar stools inside facing towards one wall and out onto the road outside. While the baby blue facade is striking, the decor inside is minimal, all white tiles and metal surfaces, with the kitchen area taking up most of the space apart from a fridge for the cold drinks.

Small, functional and bright modern cafe with seating upstairs and down. Dough is made on premises and very good. They offer a dedicated vegan pizza using Sheeze melting Mozarella and panini ditto. They offer round pizzas all day - plus pizza by the metre after 6pm. They deliver within a mile radius. Very helpful, friendly staff who have embraced the vegan option after chatting with one of the Viva! staff. We hope to encourage them to offer vegan desserts if the vegan side of the business goes well. Not sure about vegetarian cheeses - best to ask - and not sure about desserts although some are vegetarian.

COMMENTS
If Bristol University students need any inspiration while stopping off in QED Bistro on St Michael’s Hill for a bite to eat, there are not one but two photographs of Albert Einstein in this cafe, alongside other photographs of Nelson Mandela and Archimedes.

QED Bistro is most definitely a predominantly student haunt, a conveniently short walk from most of the university departments.

Other items on the menu are jackets, sandwiches, baguettes, and both savoury and sweet crepes, somewhat of a speciality here. The savoury crepe selection includes spinach, ham and cheese, while you can’t go wrong with the classic banana and chocolate if you’re looking for something sweet.

This is a buzzing little space, with the hum of lively chatter competing with Star FM on the stereo. Red leather banquettes take up the two side walls at the end of the narrow room, with the end table in an alcove of its own a popular place.

QED Bistro’s reputation among Bristol University students is secure, but this cafe deserves to be appreciated by a wider audience, not just those with lecture notes under their arms planning riots essays.

COMMENTS
Really friendly atmosphere and nuance. Sitting in the Georgian splendour of the Rajpoot Restaurant marvelling at the number of people that go jogging on the Downs it is easy to believe that the British Empire is still intact.

The Rajpoot offers the ultimate in luxury and comfort for that special meal - from the moment you walk under the welcoming green awning it is like stepping back in time to the days when India stood for all that was best in British service and excellence.

You dine in in one of Bristol's finest Georgian buildings. The linen table clothes are perfectly crisp, the chairs are comfortable and the cutlery is weighty.

COMMENTS
You will find the juice bar in the heart of St Nicholas market. It is an open bar with seating at the bar and a couple of tables. The market and the juice bar have a welcoming all inclusive energetic vibe. As well as fruit juices and wheatgrass, there is a wide range of food on offer from other vendors in the market. Vegetarian and vegan diets are well catered for.

The juice bar itself has a strong emphasis on health, nutrition and ecological sustainability. There are lots of nutrition books available at the bar to flick through/borrow while you drink your juice. Along with the emphasis on health is a strong emphasis on wheatgrass, which we grow ourselves. Many of the books you'll find at the bar deal specifically with wheatgrass. Juices are served in biodegradable corn cups.

Take a look at the juice bar photographs on the website to get a better idea of the atmosphere.
