Dear Dr Stanislaw Komorowski

I’m appalled that Poland exports horses for meat. Poland is the biggest exporter of live horses for slaughter in Europe - 87,000 each year. Most of the exported horses are sent to Italy, which involves horrendously long journeys. Horses destined for Sardinia travel 2500km which takes some 95 hours. The trucks are extremely overcrowded. Horses often lose their balance and fall, struggling desperately to regain their feet. Once down, they are likely to be trampled, urinated, defecated on and wounded by their companions. Resting periods are often ignored and horses are reloaded regardless of their condition. At the slaughterhouse, stunning methods can be performed incompletely if at all, so that the animals regain consciousness while their throats are being slit. Many are slaughtered in full view of their companions. The laws that do exist are not enforced so that even injured and diseased horses are made to travel without rest.

I demand that Poland bans the live export of horses for meat immediately. This cruelty must stop.

Yours sincerely
