Help the Horses: Write to the Polish Prime Minister
Please send this letter to the Polish Prime Minister. A
letter to Poland needs a 37p stamp.
Prezes Rady Ministrow
Pan Marek Belka
Al. Ujazdowskie 1/3
00-583 Warsawa
Poland
The letter calls for the Polish government to enforce its
animal welfare laws and bring
this illegal, unregulated and immoral trade to an end.
Dear Prime Minister
Despite a large majority of the Polish people being opposed
to the live export of horses
for meat, you allow the trade to continue. Despite condemnation
by Polands Supreme
Control Chamber as illegal and unregulated, the transporters
continue to cross your countrys borders. Despite inadequate
facilities, false documentation, a lack of veterinary control,
unsuitable vehicles and blatant contravention of the Animal
Welfare Act, the Polish government continues to promote and
excuse this immoral trade in horses.
From the many published reports, it is clear that live horse
export from Poland can be ban
immediately. The reason why this isnt done is, I suspect,
because you prefer the trade to
continue illegally rather than to end it. I believe this selective
approach to democracy is
disturbing for a country which has only recently emerged from
totalitarian control.
Animal abuse is increasingly being excused for short-term
economic considerations. I
believe it is not acceptable for you to continue to close
your eyes to what is happening to
the horses leaving your country. Albert Schweitzer reminds
us why:
Nobody is allowed to close his or her eyes and to pretend
that they cannot see the
suffering. Nobody can relieve themselves of the weight of
responsibility. When an
animal is badly treated; when the cry of animals dying of
thirst in transports reaches no
one; when slaughterhouses are filled with so much cruelty;
when animals die in pain by
unskilled hands; when animals suffer because of ruthless people,
we all should be
blamed. These words apply to all of us - but particularly
so to Prime Minsiters, who have
the legal, moral and political power to end the suffering.
I sincrely request that you do so.
Yours sincerely
