Tesco are Selling Foie-gras in Hungary
Through constant
campaigning from people like you, no major UK supermarket sells
foie-gras in Britain. However, Tesco - Britain's biggest
retailer - is selling foie-gras in its stores in Hungary
(revealed by an investigation by animal group
Four Paws). Not
content with selling live
turtles in its stores in China, Tesco have now decided to sell
the fatty livers of tortured birds in its stores in the East
European country.
Outside of France, Hungary is the biggest foie-gras producing
country in the world. Tesco try and justify selling foie-gras
in Hungary by saying it is bowing to public demand and local custom.
However, most of the foie-gras produced there is exported to
France, and there is no culinary tradition of foie-gras in
Hungary. Even if there was, there is no justification for Tesco
making profit on the back of birds that suffer such cruel treatment
that the production of foie-gras is effectively banned in the
UK. The money made in Tesco Hungary will be coming back to
shareholders in the UK. It seems that as far as animal welfare is
concerned with Tesco, out-of-sight, out-of-mind.
Complain to Tesco. Tell them it is not acceptable to ignore
animal welfare in their stores abroad. Tell them to stop selling
foie-gras anywhere!

"Dear Sir
As a customer of Tesco, I was deeply upset to find out that you are
selling foie-gras in your stores in Hungary.
Foie-gras is the grossly enlarged liver of a duck or goose
and is essentially a disease, marketed as a delicacy. Birds raised for
this 'gourmet' cruelty are force-fed enormous quantities of food
through a long metal pipe, three times a day. This process of
deliberate and painful overfeeding continues for up to a month by
which time the birds' livers have swelled to ten times their normal
size. Every year, around a million ducks die during this period of
force-feeding.
Foie-gras is not produced
in Britain, as the Government has made it clear that its production
would contravene existing animal welfare regulations, but sadly it is
still perfectly legal to import it.
There is no culinary tradition of
selling foie-gras in Hungary - in-fact, most is exported to France.
Even if there was, that is no excuse for a British company to profit
off the back of extreme animal suffering and something that would be
illegal to produce in this country.
Please remove foie-gras from sale in Hungary and commit to not
selling it in the future." |

“It’s comes from tortured ducks and geese, it’s a product of disease and it costs a fortune but some people still drool and dribble over foie-gras. It’s obtained by imprisoning birds in cages so tiny they can’t move, by forcing a pipe down their throats and force feeding them until their livers swell to ten times their natural size. There is always someone who’s ready to excuse barbarity and cruelty and that’s what those who eat it and those who sell it are doing. But there is no excuse and that’s why everyone should back Viva!’s campaign to make Britain foie-gras free. It certainly has my support.” Viva! patron Heather Mills
