Dear Marks & Spencer
I am extremely disappointed to discover that M&S has gone back
on its word, and is once again fully involved in the shameful practice
of factory farming ducks despite assuring its customers that it had
a commitment to "promoting free-range poultry".
A recent undercover investigation on a national TV news channel revealed
shameful conditions at your supplier, MFD Foods. They discovered
dead and dying ducklings littered throughout the sheds, birds suffering
from eye infections and in considerable distress, filthy ducks unable
to clean themselves because their water supply was so restricted
and others who could not walk, dragging themselves along by their
wings. These are exactly the same kind of conditions Viva! exposed
at this supplier in 2004, which led to you dropping factory-farmed
whole duck.
I understand that in light on this footage you are no longer taking
ducks from this supplier, but I would like an explanation as to why
M&S went back on its word and has misled its customers. I would
also like to know who is currently supplying duck meat to you, and
what welfare scheme is in now in place in an attempt to prevent the
scenes shown in this latest investigation.
However, I understand that similar conditions exist everywhere these
essentially wild birds are intensively farmed, and you simply cannot
have high welfare on a factory farm. In light of this, I call on
you to immediately end the sale of all factory-farmed duck meat.
