Dear Mr Beaumont
I am writing to register my profound concern at the results of Viva!’s investigation into the Co-op’s duck meat suppliers. Your company markets itself as an ethical trader but there is nothing ethical about the conditions Viva! exposed.
They discovered dead and dying ducklings littered throughout the sheds, birds suffering from eye infections and in considerable distress, filthy ducks unable to clean themselves because their water supply was so restricted and others who could not walk, dragging themselves along by their wings. I understand that similar conditions exist everywhere these essentially wild birds are intensively farmed.
I understand that you are now selling duck meat accredited by the RSPCA’s Freedom Foods. However, these ducks are still factory-farmed, and are provided no access to the outside and no water for swimming – a serious welfare insult to an aquatic, essentially wild, bird. I am disappointed that you did not take the opportunity to drop duck meat for once and for all.
In light of this, I call on you to give your ethical claims meaning by immediately ending the sale of all factory-farmed duck meat.
Yours sincerely
