We the undersigned pledge not to buy Welsh dairy products. We recognise that the Welsh Assembly's decision to annihilate badgers in parts of Wales is one designed to prop up the Welsh dairy industry - and is not a decision supported by the majority of science or common sense.

We recognise that the TB epidemic in Wales is a product of bad farming practices - with huge numbers of cattle movements; insufficient testing in place; as well as the intensification of farming practices, which has meant that cattle are more susceptible to disease.

We also recognise that the Welsh Assembly is ignoring the 10 year study by top scientists which established that badger 'culling' will not control TB in cattle. This means thousands of badgers will be cruelly killed to no purpose - other than mollifying farmers who refuse to change their ways. The Welsh Assembly has admitted that if 'culling' extends across all Wales, badgers could be wiped out from certain areas in a slaughter that may last until the 2030s.

We the undersigned believe that the Welsh Assembly is ignoring the science and the will of the people, so we have decided to use our consumer powers to send them a clear message that we do not support their decision to destroy wildlife. We will boycott all Welsh dairy produce at least until the needless killing of badgers ends.

''A mass slaughter of badgers is due to take place in Wales next month - and it's all a sham. It's supposed to stop the spread of TB in cattle, but science says it won't work. However, farmers want it and politicians wanting to keep rural seats are keen to please them. It is bad farming practices that are to blame, but badgers are being scapegoated. Show you don't agree with this by boycotting Welsh dairy products!''

''I am horrified at the ill-judged decision of the Welsh Assembly to go ahead with a cull of badgers in the vain hope of propping up the continuing bad practices of the Welsh dairy industry. The badger is an iconic native animal that should be treated with respect. The planned cull cannot be supported on any grounds whatsoever. The irresponsible and unethical decision to go ahead is a shameful slur on the Welsh nation and may exacerbate the incidence of bovine TB. Lazy farmers will continue with their bad husbandry of cattle and wildlife will once again suffer at the hands of selfish humans. It is almost impossible for me to express how strongly I feel about this issue. Large scale dairy farming is a wasteful industry that is making a major contribution to climate change and global warming. That the Welsh Assembly has decided to cull badgers for such a poor reason is beyond belief.''

''Why do Buddhists advocate vegetarianism? The main reason is "mercy", and because we "cannot bear to eat the flesh of living creatures." And our belief in karma tells us that we must eventually suffer the consequences of our evil actions. A Buddhist sutra says: "The bodhisattva fears the original action; the myriad of living creatures fear the consequences." This means that the bodhisattva knows the seriousness of the consequences and does not do evil things; neither does he think about the causes of bad consequences. Finally, I also believe that a vegetarian diet better enables one to keep a pure body and mind and this purity is an important foundation of self-cultivation. My conversion to vegetarianism was based on these three considerations. "Mercy" is an important way of learning to be a better person. Being without mercy is simply incompatible with being a Buddhist. Having a merciful and compassionate heart will show up in all aspects of one's life; but the simplest and most direct way is to follow a vegetarian diet. Think of the intense pain of accidentally stepping on a nail is. So how can one have the heart to eat the flesh of creatures who have suffered the pain of being slaughtered, skinned, dismembered, and cooked? Being unable to bring ourselves to eat the flesh of these poor creatures is an expression of mercy. The pain of creatures on the road to our table is not some fanciful concoction; it is excruciatingly real. Let us cite the cooked live shrimp and crab that are so popular today as an example. Meeting their end by being cooked in water is like being sent to a boiling hell. Their desperate but doomed efforts to crawl or jump out betray the unbearable pain they experience. Finally they give their life in sorrow as they turn bright red. What a painful end! In Buddhist teaching, volume upon volume has been written regarding cause and consequence, but the basic concept is a simple one. "Good is rewarded with good; evil is rewarded with evil; and the rewarding of good and evil is only a matter of time." Viewed from this concept, we will have to pay for every piece of flesh we eat with a piece of flesh, and with a life for every creature's life that we take. Viewed over the long term, eating meat is an extremely frightening prospect. Before their death, living creatures experience not joy, and not fear, but anger; not complaint, but hatred and resentment. And who receives the "reward" for taking these lives? According to Buddhist teaching among the sentient beings, there are no second-class citizens. Human beings do not have a privileged, special place above and beyond that of the rest of life. The world is not a creation specifically for the benefit and pleasure of human beings. "The creatures that inhabit this earth - be they human beings or animals - are here to contribute, each in it's own particular way, to the beauty and the prosperity of the world." - Tenzin Gyatso His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama ''

''The plans for a badger cull in England and Wales are unethical and unnecessary. The ISG's findings were clear: that badger culling could not play meaningful role in the control of bTB. All scientific studies so far agree that the only way a cull could have an effect is by eradicating badgers completely from an area, which, given the widespread nature of cattle farming, would be tantamount to driving the species to extinction in England and Wales. This is unacceptable. The badger is a native and protected species in the UK, and has as much right to exist here as humans. Too long has the farming industry disregarded the rights of other species, in a world where other industries have to account for the impact of their actions on the environment. The government's claims that a badger cull will be "science led" are absurd, being about as science led as "intelligent design". Studies have shown that culling disrupts group structure and promotes movement of badgers, consequently promoting spread of the disease. This has been shown to cause an increase in bTB in areas adjacent to a cull. If culling, and the choice of whether to cull is left to farmers, this will create a patchwork of extermination that will do nothing but make the problem worse. In addition, the plan to leave the cull in the hands of farmers, without any training of how to conduct the cull, shows a lack of any regard for the welfare and suffering of the individual animals who will be killed. I am also horrified at the government's attempts to mislead farmers into supporting this ill-conceived scheme. Paice and Jones are happy to shout loudly about how big a problem bTB is, how the situation is getting worse, and how it must be dealt with by culling badgers. However, never is any evidence presented that culling badgers will have the desired effect. Even the assertion that the problem is increasing is highly dubious. The figures on DEFRA's website show a significant decrease in bTB between 2008 and 2009, but this is never mentioned when addressing farmers. If the Government is to have a consultation, they should at least ensure that those they are consulting are in possession of the facts, rather than forcing them into an ill-informed opinion. Since the farming industry, and the politicians purporting to support it, will not listen to reason, and do not seem to possess any notion of ethics or the rights of other species, I will not buy English or Welsh dairy products until this ridiculous vendetta is ended.''

''To whom it may concern, I wish to object strongly to the cull of badgers. Badger culling cannot meaningfully contribute to the future control of cattle TB in Britain and the cull has no scientific basis and is not a suitable way to eradicate the disease. Furthermore The Badger's Trust states:- The Badger Trust rejects the proposals contained in the Government's consultation paper (published September 15). They lack scientific credibility and far from easing the current bovine TB situation they could – as the ISG demonstrated—make matters worse. The suggestion that farmers and landowners might be licensed to shoot free-running badgers is unacceptable. Shooting badgers at night is likely to be inhumane, inefficient and potentially dangerous to all wildlife and to the public. We recognise that bovine TB is a major issue. But these proposals do nothing to resolve a complex problem which has its roots in the way cattle are managed and tested. Personally, I object VERY strongly to the culling of this wild animal. ''I fully support all the above comments. There is no evidence whatsoever to support the notion that mass killing of badgers will eradicate TB in cattle. Research suggests that bovine TB is an airborne infection. It is therefore impossible to say that the badger is the only vector to transmit the disease. Review of the care and management of livestock, not to mention the education of ill informed farmers who intend to perpetuate this pointless practice is well overdue. Changes in practice similar to those prompted by the CJD in cattle alert some years ago would in the long term prove far more productive and beneficial.''

Vaccination of cattle seems a far more viable solution. Taking into account that a third of the worlds human population is infected with TB with new infections at a rate of 1 a second do they propose to cull humans in infected areas? ''

''This latest excuse to make badgers scapegoats for the poor husbandry that is attributed solely to the farmers With TB being carried by nearly all mammals it is badges who are singled out. This is totally unfair and INHUMAN and the 'farmers union' or Government lackies should take a close look at the scientific evidence instead of keeping the farmers happy This whole situation is open to total misuse. Whole families of badgers will be totally at the land owner/farmer's mercy and will face death by being dug out, the sett filled with silage, gassed, poisoned and any other torture that may be thought of. To expect that a badger will be trapped in a cage and then humanely shot shows nievety in the extreme. Come on Tories stop this wholesale slaughter, because that is what it will be.There are a lot of your voters who are not farmers, who are totally against this latest piece of mischief.''

''For many years now, Badgerland have held the view that the primary cause of bovine TB in cattle is from other cattle. TB in other species is essentially a spillover problem from cattle. Killing badgers will do nothing to solve the problem of TB in cattle; as there is no evidence that badgers transmit TB either to other badgers or other species in any significant numbers. suggested solution (of killing badgers) will do more harm than good to Welsh and British agriculture; and the joint losers will be all those badgers who will be killed for nothing, as well as the farmers who will still have a sick industry. The immediate solution is better TB testing in cattle, to cull out infected cattle. It is so obvious that it is hardly worth saying, but the ONLY long term solution is vaccination of all animals which can suffer from TB. ''

''It is not the right of anyone one whether local or main Government to say which species of non-human animals should live or not. This country is supposed to be a nation for respecting and loving non-human animals. Cattle are so abused and taken advantage of all in the name of profit. I truly feel for them. To blame another species such as the badgers for TB is blatantly short sighted. We should be privileged to have such beautiful creatures in our country. To take their lives is outright cruel and a murderous act. Those who would do such a thing are no better than those human animals that sadly slaughter the beautiful whales, seals, dolphins, tigers and so on. The problem lies with the human animals that do not respect and treat other species on this planet. I am wholeheartedly against the taking of any badgers lives. They should be allowed to live their lives in full and in peace. They have enough problems to contend without the human-animals inflicting any on them. They would live their lives in peace if there were no humans around, as the dinosaurs once did. Please leave the badgers alone. ''

I am the secretary of the high peak group and I am a member of the wirral and cheshire group. I started my pledge to help the badger after seeing the news last year, that the welsh governement wanted to cull them. We at the badger trust won in court to squash the stupied idea.!! yet again they intend to,in my opinion slaughter what I thought was a protected wild animal. All in the name of disease, when will people learn that there are other issues to be solved first, such as some very poor farming issues. An of course they could at least give the vaccination trial a fair shot.I am very against the killing of any wild animal.I read the comments by the welsh assembly, out of all the people that voted 82% of the welsh people were AGANIST THE CULL,they have never told the public the findings of the consultation. She should by law let the people know what the results were, surely.????? I and many of my friends and family will NOT be visiting wales for any holidays in the future due to this.!!''

Yet in Northern Ireland, where no badgers are being killed, the disease continues to decline. These are the true facts and to ignore them is morally wrong on so many levels. ''
