Being a Viva! Contact
When we get enquiries from the media or local people who would like to
support our campaigns, we put them in touch with people on our Contacts
List. Contacts are campaigners (individuals or groups) who are willing
to have their contact details made available to the public.
Contacts have their details added to our official Contacts List which
we distribute to our supporters and put up on our website. If members
of the public want to get involved in campaigning in their area we
can then put them in touch with their local Contact. Similarly, if
the local press want to speak to someone local we are able to give
them a name. The public details could be just a name (or name of your group),
phone number and/or email address if you prefer. If you contact us
about becoming a campaigner, we'll send you a form allowing you to make
clear
what information you'd like made available to the public.
The main advantage of such “official” local contacts is that
regional media are much more likely to cover Viva!’s actions and
campaigns if they can find a local angle. We’ve found that it really
makes a significant difference to the amount and quality of coverage we
receive, and that really helps our campaigns to succeed. Viva! will supply
you with up-to-date and accurate information about our campaigns and all
the issues we cover. It is also, of course, important to us to be able
to tell people who contact us offering help what they can do in their local
area.
If you do not want to speak to the media but are happy to speak to
members of the public (or vice-versa), we can record that information on
our database too.
Obviously, many people prefer not to be Contacts and they still do a great
job supporting our campaigns. Campaigning should
only involve doing what you are comfortable with. Then again, many
campaigners become far more bold than they ever imagined - you might surprise
yourself!
