About Ruth

Ruth is an artist working primarily in fine hand embroidery, textiles and mixed media. She uses her art to raise awareness of animal suffering and environmental destruction.

I have been embroidering since I was a child, starting with kits and slowly moving towards making the work I produce today. I completed one year of a City and Guilds Embroidery course but felt it was stifling the work I wanted to produce. I then moved to Southern Ireland to pursue a career as an embroiderer for four years before moving to Swansea in South Wales. I have been a professional embroiderer for about 10 years now and I live with my husband James, two dogs and five cats.

I am very interested in environmental issues and do not use animal based fibres in my work. I am an active member of the Swansea Animal Rights Group.

Why Vegan

I have been a vegan for about 3 years now and had been a vegetarian for much longer. I saw a program one day on the humane killing of a chicken and I thought that I don't want anything to do with this industry, so I started looking at going vegan and there was no going back.

Why Ruth is supporting Viva!'s Art for Animals

I found out about veganism through Viva! and groups like them. I think art is a very interesting way of showing people some of the terrible things that happen in our name and it informs a whole new group of people about animal cruelty and veganism.

The 'How to Embroider a Jay' book and kit are available to order on my website www.ruthnorbury.com
