About Katherine

Katherine is fascinated by human behaviour, both as individuals and in groups, something she has had a chance to observe over many years in business as a director and consultant in finance, governance and responsibility. Having a particular interest in how we come to accept specific constructs of our society, she shares with many a concern for how we humans perceive our role in this complex and beautiful planet which we inhabit along with a wonderful diversity of other species and plant life.

On leaving school, Katherine chose the business degree option above the place she had won at architectural college. Nevertheless, she has retained a strong interest in art, architecture and engineering design throughout her career, at one stage in the 1980s for instance, being both the Finance Director for Heathrow Airport and also the Chair of the Airport's Design Committee. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.

Why Katherine is supporting Viva!'s Art for Animals

For some, deciding not to eat animal products is a long journey over time. For others it is an instant decision. All my life I have felt empathy for other species. I have tried to behave with care towards all animals. But for me the big moment was, as a young accountant, having to audit a slaughter house. I will never forget the horrific sights, sounds, and oddly, above all, the smell. Then and there I decided against eating anything which had a face.

Viva!'s objectives are so very important for three vital, urgent and complementary reasons:
*for looking after our own individual health
*for defending farm and other animals from cruelty and abuse with ever increasing importance
*for preserving land and other resources for wildlife at a time when the burgeoning human population is clamouring to eat meat
